Introduction

Nestled on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River in Srikalahasti, the majestic Srikalahasti Temple stands as one of the most powerful Shiva temples in India. Revered as the Vayu Lingam among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, this ancient temple represents the element of Air (Vayu).

Devotees believe that this temple removes negative energies, planetary doshas, and karmic obstacles. It is especially famous for Rahu–Ketu Pooja, performed to overcome astrological challenges.

Why It Is Called Vayu Lingam?

Srikalahasti Temple represents Vayu (Air) among the five elemental Shiva temples of South India:

  • 🌍 Earth – Ekambareswarar (Kanchipuram)

  • 🔥 Fire – Arunachaleswarar (Tiruvannamalai)

  • 💧 Water – Jambukeswarar (Tiruchirapalli)

  • 🌌 Space – Chidambaram

  • 🌬️ Air – Srikalahasti

Inside the sanctum, a lamp flickers continuously despite no visible airflow — symbolizing the presence of the air element. The Shiva Lingam here is believed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu).

Historical Significance

The temple dates back to ancient times and gained prominence during the rule of the Chola dynasty and later expanded by the Vijayanagara Empire.

The magnificent 120-foot tall gopuram was built by Krishnadevaraya, one of the greatest rulers of South India.

The temple's name comes from a legend:

  • Sri – Spider

  • Kala – Serpent

  • Hasti – Elephant

These three creatures worshipped Lord Shiva here and attained salvation.

Rahu–Ketu Pooja – Special Attraction

Srikalahasti is famously known as the “Kashi of the South” for performing Rahu–Ketu Dosha Nivarana Pooja.
