Nestled in the holy town of Deoghar in Jharkhand, India, Baidyanath Dham is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. It is widely regarded as one of the Twelve Jyotirlingas — sacred abodes of Lord Shiva — and is also considered a powerful Shakti Peetha, a sacred place of Goddess Shakti, making it spiritually significant for millions of devotees.

In local parlance, it is often called Baba Dham, and revered as a powerful center of Shiva-Shakti worship.

Legend of the Jyotirlinga

According to tradition, Baidyanath Dham represents one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — manifestations of Lord Shiva where he appeared as light (Jyoti) to bless devotees. The Jyotirlinga here is believed to grant salvation and blessings to every pilgrim who offers sincere devotion.

Some legends connect this sacred site to Ravana, the mighty king of Lanka, who is said to have tried to take the Shiva Linga from here but it became rooted at Deoghar.

📅 Shravani Mela

One of the most famous religious festivals in India, the Shravani Mela is a month-long event held during the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August). Millions of devotees (often Kanwariyas) undertake the sacred trek from Bihar and other states carrying holy Ganga water to offer at Baidyanath Dham. This mela is one of the largest pilgrimages in India.

The nearest major railway station is Jasidih Junction, well connected to cities like Patna, Delhi, Kolkata and Ranchi. From there, it’s a short taxi or rickshaw ride to the temple.

Regular buses and taxis connect Deoghar to major cities across Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and eastern India.
